HI all, this is my second GlobeRiders tour, having joined the Himalayan Adventure, my first, last year. I have asked a few multiple GlobeRider tour riders which adventure ride has been their favorite. Response: "...they were all my favorite." I can understand why.
This is my first time in Africa. I arrived in Cape Town a few days early in order to acclimate. Helge and the Bauers, Birgit and Fred, arrived at about the same time; Aaron, a couple of days later. We shared time exploring the bustling waterfront area at the Breakwater Lodge for a couple of days while taking some opportunity to rest from our long journeys to Cape Town from both coasts of the U.S., and, in the case of the Bauers, Germany. During this time, I had an opportunity to visit Table Mountain where a cable car took me to the top for some hiking and absolutely breathtaking views.
We departed the hotel for Swellendam representing the southernmost point on the African Continent, where we could stand straddling the Indian and Atlantic Oceans. From there we continued to Knysna, where en route we dined at an ostrich farm (but not on ostrich), and got to meet some fine birds, see photo.
Fast forwarding, I have had a great ride so far, navigating gravel, sand packed mud and just mud as well as a good number of great winding roads modulated by cattle, goats, baboons, giraffes, and occasional elephants. There were some challenging sections of roadway to be sure, but Helge provides easier options which I always eagerly take.
And by the way, a cool thing about these GlobeRiders adventures is that Helge loads our GPS units with tracks and waypoints, enabling us to ride independently, as a group or in subgroups, our choice. We meet in the morning when Helge describes what to expect and options to consider. This versatility of riding independently, or not, with all we need to make the day’s journey displayed on our GPS is instructive and confidence-building, at least for me, as I am a rider of lesser experience than the others.
